    Geisenheim near Frankfurt am Main, 29 September 2025<\/em> \u2013 Pekutherm Kunststoffe GmbH is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The family-owned company from Geisenheim in the Rheingau region has established itself as a specialist in the recycling of engineering plastics, processing acrylic glass (PMMA) and polycarbonate offcuts into high-quality, single-grade recyclates. In doing so, Pekutherm has been advancing the circular economy in Europe for decades and contributing to resource conservation and climate protection\u2014long before sustainability entered the public spotlight.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

    Family Business with Tradition<\/h2><\/div>

    Pekutherm was founded in 1985 by Erwin Pfister\u2014the company name is a reversed abbreviation of \u201cThermoplastische Kunststoffe Erwin Pfister\u201d. In 1993, his son Heiko Pfister joined the business; since 2000 he has managed the company as a managing partner together with his wife, Daniela Pfister. With Lena Pfister, the third generation is now also active in the family enterprise.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>

    Expansion at the Geisenheim Site<\/h2><\/div>

    In 2013, Pekutherm moved its headquarters from Raunheim to Geisenheim and developed a modern industrial facility with 15,000 square metres of production and storage space. Around two million euros have been invested over the past three years alone to modernise plant technology and expand production areas. The site enables significant capacity increases in view of rising demand for acrylic glass. The company plans to double its PMMA recycling volume to 10,000 tonnes within the next three years and to consistently expand its activities across Europe.<\/p>\n<\/div>

    Taking Responsibility for the Circular Economy<\/h2><\/div>

    Pekutherm is committed to driving a Europe-wide PMMA circular economy. Rather than losing valuable resources to incineration, the company focuses on recovery and reuse. As a certified waste-management specialist, Pekutherm sees it as its duty to return growing volumes of waste to closed material cycles\u2014making a measurable contribution to resource conservation and climate protection, long before sustainability became a mainstream topic. \u201cA mandatory recycled-content quota would be a strong incentive to curb resource waste effectively,\u201d emphasised Managing Director Heiko Pfister.<\/p>\n

    \u201cThe volume of PMMA waste in Europe is estimated at around 30,000 tonnes per year. Of that, we alone in Geisenheim return 5,000 tonnes to reuse through recycling,\u201d explained Pfister. Far too much material is still shipped outside the EU and recycled to a lower standard, removing it from our value cycle\u2014unnecessary, since recyclates can match virgin material in quality and purity, and harmful from a climate perspective. \u201cFor every 100 tonnes of recycled material used, almost 500 tonnes of carbon dioxide can be saved,\u201d Pfister added.<\/p>\n<\/div>

    A Holistic Approach with Clear Values<\/h2><\/div>

    With an end-to-end concept for collection, processing and reintegration, Pekutherm ensures plastics are efficiently looped back into the cycle. Sorting is handled by a team of around 25 specialists, who inspect every piece by hand before the thermoplastic is processed in modern cutting mills. The resulting recyclate is supplied to customers in consistent quality. Pekutherm also sees itself as a dependable partner: transparent processes, environmental and social responsibility, and respectful collaboration are embedded in the company\u2019s culture.<\/p>\n<\/div>

    As it expands capacity, Pekutherm aims to deepen partnerships with manufacturers and processors. Recycling acrylic glass and polycarbonate offers multiple advantages: it conserves resources and helps companies deliver on their sustainability strategies. At the same time, Pekutherm\u2019s recyclate is price-competitive\u2014with no compromise on quality or purity. Consumer attitudes are also shifting: recyclable products are moving into focus and increasingly expected as standard.<\/p>\n<\/div>

    Pekutherm works with leading companies and initiatives to establish closed material cycles in the plastics industry. These include the Closing the Loop project with Exolon Group, collaborations with POLYVANTIS to take back PLEXIGLAS\u00ae offcuts, and participation in the European Alliance for Sustainable PMMA Recycling founded by R\u00f6hm.<\/p>\n
